What we did this year for Thanksgiving...St Feuilliens

Belgium is famous for its beer.  Unlike Germany, who were once under the Reinheitsgebot (the beer purity laws), the Belgians use various ingredients in their brews.  As a result, instead of only having a few famous beers (like Ireland has Guinness, Czech has Pilsner Urquell) Belgium is littered with small breweries that sell their product throughout the country.  And boy oh boy are they good.

So here are a few interesting beer facts.

- Belgian breweries produce about 800 standard beers.  When special one-off beers are included (like christmas brews) the total number grows to about 8700.

- The average Belgian drinks 93 liters of beer a year

- Belgian beers are a lot stronger than what we’re used to in the States.  In the US beers will be anywhere between 3-5% alcohol.  In Belgium, they’re normally between 7-11%.  yahoo.

Over Thanksgiving we went on a tour of one of the smaller breweries in the area.  We had a really great time.

They equipment was so old and beautiful.

The essential ingredients: hops and barley.

Have I mentioned how attractive my brother is?

Now you know how they go through 93 liters a year.

Now, don’t you wish you were here?
