After touring Seville the three of us headed down to Gibraltar that evening to see the famous rock. I knew it was going to be huge, but we were all pretty amazed when we looked out the window and saw through the dusk and fog a massive cliff face in front of us.
The next morning we took a cable car to the top of the rock and were shocked by what we saw: MONKEYS! I had read that there were wild monkeys on the Rock of Gibraltar, but thought that we’d be lucky to even get a glimpse of one. I was ever so wrong. There were about 20 monkeys hanging out near the cable car exit, and we probably saw close to 70 while we were walking around. They are wild monkeys, and (as we were told over and over by the park officials) they bite if you aren’t careful.
At one point I knelt down to take this picture (who can resist an adorable baby monkey):
And then this happened!
There is a crazy wave in my hair because the monkey decided that my headband just wasn’t stylish enough and so had already thrown it down the street. I, of course, have never head a monkey on my head before, so I decided not to argue with him. or her. whatever it was.
Legend has it that the British will leave Gibraltar when the last monkey disappears off the rock.
This is the second cliff.
As you can see, there really were monkeys everywhere.
A bunch of the ships getting ready to go through the canal.
Anyway, it was a really fun experience being there. The only downside was that the area in general was really run down and a little dirty. I’m really glad we went, but I don’t think I’d ever need to go back again. But the monkeys were awesome!!
