The Champagne Region and Lille

While visiting Rob and Lindsey we took a couple trips to Northern France.

First we went to Reims, which is in the Champagne Region.  We had a great time touring around the city.  Allie LOVED the cathedral- it’s so fun to watch her walk around the place totally in awe of all the paintings and stained glass windows.

See how she loves it?

apparently the Men in Black hadn’t arrived to erase all our memories of the crash yet.

Allie’s first drink.

Impressive, no?

We then headed to the Mercier Vineyard. Mercier is the most popular selling champagne in France but isn’t sold in many other countries.  We had a great time- the tour was pretty cool.

We

This is the top half of this cask.  This particular cask took over 10 years to create and was the number 2 attraction for the 1889 World Exhibition- the number 1 being the Eiffel Tower.  It took 8 days, 24 oxen, driven by 12 men with an additional 18 horses to help pull it up the slopes from Northern France to Paris.  Apparently they had to reinforce 3 bridges and demolish 5 buildings just to get it there.

Here’s a look at a section on the cellers

All the vineyards have these markers.

LILLE

A few days later we traveled to a town called Lille.  It is a beautiful little town that is a really fun place to walk through.

See how pretty the town is?

This is a really interesting church.  It was once a beautiful cathedral but the front was blown off.  Though the front looks pretty industrial the inside is awesome.

See how much light it lets in?  It is really cool when you see it in person.

This is an active military base, which is pretty crazy since it was built after Louis XIV conquered the city in 1667.
